چکیده

In the context of aerial imagery, one of the rst steps toward a coherent processing of the information contained in multiple images is geo-registration, which consists in assigning geographic 3D coordinates to the pixels of the image. This enables accurate alignment and geo-positioning of multiple images, detection of moving objects and fusion of data acquired from multiple sensors. To solve this problem there are di erent approaches that require, in addition to a precise characterization of the camera sensor, high resolution referenced images or terrain elevation models, which are usually not publicly available or out of date. Building upon the idea of developing technology that does not need a reference terrain elevation model, we propose a geo-registration technique that applies variational methods to obtain a dense and coherent surface elevation model that is used to replace the reference model. The surface elevation model is built by interpolation of scattered 3D points, which are obtained in a two-step process following a classical stereo pipeline: rst, coherent disparity maps between image pairs of a video sequence are estimated and then image point correspondences are back-projected. The proposed variational method enforces continuity of the disparity map not only along epipolar lines (as done by previous geo-registration techniques) but also across them, in the full 2D image domain. In the experiments, aerial images from synthetic video sequences have been used to validate the proposed technique.

Local Bundling of Disparity Maps for Improved Dense 3D Visual Reconstruction

This thesis presents a new method for improved resolution of stereoscopic 3D terrain mapping by local dense bundling of disparity maps. The Unmanned Systems Lab (USL) at Virginia Tech is designing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) first-response system capable of 3D terrain mapping in the wake of a nuclear event. The UAV is a helicopter, and is equipped with a stereo boom imaging system, GPS, an...

New Pseudo-CT Generation Approach from Magnetic Resonance Imaging using a Local Texture Descriptor

Background: One of the challenges of PET/MRI combined systems is to derive an attenuation map to correct the PET image. For that, the pseudo-CT image could be used to correct the attenuation. Until now, most existing scientific researches construct this pseudo-CT image using the registration techniques. However, these techniques suffer from the local minima of the non-rigid deformation energy f...

Co-registering and Normalizing Stereo-based Elevation Data to Support Building Detection in Vhr Images

Building detection from very high resolution (VHR) remote sensing images has been an active research area for more than two decades. This is because building information is crucial for analysing urban environments, and also because VHR images are the ideal geo-spatial data source for extracting and mapping such information. Since optical images are a 2D projection of the real world surface, ele...

Stereo Mosaics from a Moving Video Camera for Environmental Monitoring

Environmental monitoring using automated analysis of high-resolution aerial video is an application of growing importance with its own set of technical challenges. A mosaic is a commonly used tool for representing the enormous amount of data generated from aerial video sequences in an easily viewable form. In contrast to the usual applications of mosaics, the environmental monitoring domain req...

Dense and Reliable Dsm Generation from Vhr Stereo Pairs in Urban Environments

Photogrammetric terrain reconstruction from aerial and space stereopairs of images occupies a prominent place in cartography and remote sensing. Stereo vision systems determine depth from two or more images using automated techniques. The most important and time consuming task for a stereo vision system is the registration of both images, i.e. the matching of corresponding pixels. Area based st...
